Summer World Leadership Congress – Washington DC
The 2008 Summer World Leadership Congress (WLC) will be held July 25 - August 2, in Washington DC. Approximately 500 Ambassadors from around the globe are expected to attend, which in turn, will require more than 100 adults to volunteer their time and talents to tomorrow’s leaders before, during, and after the event. We invite you to become part of HOBY’s global youth leadership team by applying for a volunteer role that suits you best. You may select one of the key director positions, a traditional facilitator role, perhaps you would like to be apart of team alumni, or serve as an alumni section assistant.

2008-2009 Annual Volunteer Application
Come volunteer for HOBY! Whether you are a long-time volunteer and plan to continue for the coming year, or a potential new volunteer and want to learn more, please complete the 2008-2009 volunteer application. ALL HOBY Volunteers should complete the online application no matter what your role. And if you don’t know what your role might be, that’s fine too - please apply online, and we’ll find a volunteer opportunity for you!
About Local HOBY Programs
High school students throughout the United States participate in local HOBY programs, including alumni service projects and excursions, and over 70 weekend HOBY Leadership Seminars conducted each spring. These local HOBY programs are coordinated by over 4,000 volunteers, committed to making a difference for the youth of their state. Local HOBY Affiliates recruit new volunteers regularly to serve on their volunteer planning committees and corporate boards. There are many ways to participate and make a difference:
- Work directly with students during the programs as Adult Facilitators
- Organize speaker panels and plan leadership building activities
- Recruit schools and students to participate
- Assist with fundraising and gathering donated items
- Provide oversight and guidance by serving on the local board of directors

Junior Staff – for young HOBY Alumni
Do you remember your experience as a HOBY ambassador? As HOBY alumni, you have the unique ability to be selected as a Junior Staff volunteer at your local seminar, and help give this outstanding experience to future ambassadors! Junior Staff assist the seminar planning committee and facilitators, and providing a positive role model of volunteerism to their younger peers. Common seminar functions provided by Junior Staff include facility set-up and clean-up, seminar greeters, cheer leaders and more. The first step is to becoming Junior Staff is to participate in “Pass the Torch of Spirit” and ensure that a sophomore student has been registered to represent your high school at the seminar. Then, contact your local HOBY Leadership Seminar Chair or Alumni Advisor for a Junior Staff application.
Community Leadership Workshops (CLeW) – Plan One in Your Community
A CLeW is a one-day HOBY leadership program for high school freshmen. A typical CLeW consists of 50-100 freshmen participating in panel sessions, interactive leadership exercises and hands-on community service. Every CLeW has a volunteer Chairperson, age 21 or older, and a local sponsor, such as a service club, company, school district or university. Younger volunteers can help, too, as CLeW Assistants. HOBY Headquarters – Los Angeles, CA
If you are in Southern California and are interested in helping out at HOBY Headquarters, we would love to talk to you. Located on the corner of Wilshire and Westwood Boulevards (near UCLA), we are in need of everyday help in a plethora of office roles. AYUSA International – Host a Foreign Student in Your Home
As trained leaders who specialize in leadership, service and ambassadorship, HOBY volunteers and alumni are the perfect match for a life-changing cultural learning opportunity offered by AYUSA—hosting foreign exchange students. For more than 20 years, AYUSA International has promoted world peace through intercultural understanding by reaching into areas of the world where student exchange has never been possible. AYUSA is looking for caring families who wish to open their home and share in a meaningful exchange with a young person from another country. Students come from Western, Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and the South Pacific. Each teenage student is eager, bright and above all, interested in learning about the U.S.! Specifically, each student is carefully screened by AYUSA and must be:
- Between 15-18 years old
- Able to speak, read, and write in English
- Strong academic achievers
- Enthusiastic and willing to learn
- Insured and have their own “pocket” money
Once you decide to become an international host, AYUSA’s network of local representatives will work closely with you to help you select your student, facilitate school registration, and provide friendly, professional support and guidance throughout the year.
