The 2017 World Leadership Congress will take place from July 22-29 at Loyola University in Chicago, IL and we are currently accepting volunteer applications. First, review the corresponding job descriptions below for more information and then apply by clicking the link below. Please note: this is the only application on the site that applies to volunteering at the WLC.

Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to/from Chicago. HOBY will take care of lodging, meals, transportation and all other costs (except for personal spending money) for the majority of volunteer positions during the event.

HOBY’s World Leadership Congress is a dynamic leadership development opportunity that brings together students from around the globe for 8 days of educational programming, community service, personal development and fun. The 2017 WLC is scheduled for Saturday, July 22 – Saturday, July 29 at Loyola University Chicago.

Each year we strive to select a diverse team of volunteers that will not only deliver a life-changing experience to the ambassadors in attendance, but also allow those selected to expand and develop their own leadership skills. Many factors go into the selection of the volunteer team, including volunteer experience, professional and educational background, succession planning, volunteer development and in some cases specific technical skills. We do actively work to bring volunteers new to the WLC onto the team each year, so if you have applied in the past and have not been selected, please don’t let that discourage you from applying again.

Below, you will find general descriptions of each volunteer position available for the WLC as well as any prerequisite skills, experience or age requirements.  Additionally, we will host two live-chats on October 9, 2016 and December 4, 2016 to answer questions about the positions, the application itself, and the selection process.  Information about the live-chats will be posted on this website and on social media.

MOST volunteers will be asked to arrive on Thursday, July 20, 2017 unless otherwise stated. When we indicate an expected arrival date, we are referring to an expected late afternoon or evening arrival, so volunteers are available the following morning for scheduled responsibilities. Unscheduled early volunteer arrivals will not be able to check-in on campus until their scheduled arrival date.

All volunteers are responsible for their own travel expenses to the Loyola University Chicago Lakeshore Campus (including parking for the duration of the event). For the “full time, onsite” positions, HOBY will cover your room and board costs and any program expenses beginning with dinner on your scheduled arrival date through breakfast on your departure date, which, for most is Sunday, July 30, 2017. For the “part time, onsite” positions, HOBY will cover your meal expenses while scheduled to work onsite. Typically, on-campus housing is limited to the full time, onsite volunteers and isn’t provided for day volunteers or other part-time volunteers, although HOBY will consider special requests based upon availability.

Working closely with HOBY’s Chief International Programs Officer, the WLC Leadership Team will be responsible for the planning and implementation of the 2017 WLC. The Leadership Team meets monthly beginning in November and bi-weekly beginning in April. Leadership team members will also coordinate their individual team meetings and participate in a WLC planning retreat in Chicago. Although all volunteer positions do require a complete application, some of these positions will be appointed directly by the Chair with the approval of HOBY. All members of the Leadership Team are considered full time, onsite volunteers and will need to be onsite for the duration of the program with an expected on-campus check in of Tuesday, July 18 and a departure date of Sunday, July 30, 2017.

WLC Chair: (Position Filled) As chair of HOBY’s largest and longest running student leadership program, the WLC Chair coordinates and oversees the entire WLC including the program,  the WLC volunteer team, planning, preparation, and execution. Requires past WLC experience as a Vice-Chair and/or Section Leader, with local HOBY Seminar/Affiliate key volunteer / leadership experience preferred. Must be over 25 years of age. The WLC Chair requires an extensive amount of advance planning work and some post-event work. The WLC chair is expected to participate in weekly meetings with the Director of International Programs, as well as Leadership Team Meetings. Additionally, the Chair does serve as a representative to HOBY’s Field Operations and Program Committee during that time. There is a separate application process for this position and appointments are typically announced two years in advance.

Assistant to the WLC Chair (Position Filled): Assists WLC Chair as directed. Requires past HOBY volunteer experience. Must be 18 years of age or over. This position requires a moderate amount of advance work.

Vice Chair, Operations: Coordinates the operations team; executes and implements all of the operational logistics for the event. The Operations Team integrates with all other teams to effectively manage the needs outlined in advance and serves as the primary liaison with the host facility. Strong communications and organizational skills are needed in this position. Requires past WLC experience and preferably additional key volunteer experience at a HOBY State Leadership Seminar. Must be over 25 years of age. Vice Chair positions require a significant amount of advance work and a limited amount of post-event work.

Vice Chair, Ambassador Staff: Coordinates the section leader and facilitator teams; responsible for a positive ambassador experience through effective group management and program facilitation. The Ambassador Team is the front line volunteers working directly with ambassadors and as such must integrate with all other teams to effectively manage the ambassador experience. Requires past WLC experience and preferably additional key volunteer experience at a HOBY State Leadership Seminar. Must be over 25 years of age. Vice Chair positions require a significant amount of advance work and a limited amount of post-event work.

Vice Chair, Program: Coordinates the program team; develops and executes the WLC educational program in accordance to the HOBY Leadership Curriculum. The Program Team integrates with other teams to execute the program effectively. A thorough understanding of HOBY curriculum and program development is needed in this position. Requires past WLC experience and preferably additional key volunteer experience at a HOBY State Leadership Seminar. Must be over 25 years of age. Vice Chair positions require a significant amount of advance work and a limited amount of post-event work.

Vice Chair, Marketing & Publicity: Coordinates all of the publications, marketing outreach, social media and public relations for the WLC as well as the onsite HOBY Store. The Marketing & Publicity team integrates with all teams as to effectively communicate important information to all stakeholders. Additionally the Vice Chair will work with the Director of International Programs to develop and implement student recruitment strategies and will serve as a liaison with HOBY’s Public Relations partners to plan an effective media plan. Requires past WLC experience and preferably additional key volunteer experience at a HOBY State Leadership Seminar. Must be over 25 years of age. Vice Chair positions require a significant amount of advance work and a limited amount of post-event work.

Vice Chair, Ambassador Safety: Coordinates the onsite medic team and serves as Chief Medic. Develops and implements all safety and emergency plans as needed, monitors any situation that can impact students or volunteers including weather and any international or local community health concerns. The Ambassador Safety team integrates with all teams to develop appropriate plans to keep ambassadors and volunteers safe and healthy throughout the event. Requires past WLC experience, must be over 25 years of age. Vice Chair positions require a significant amount of advance work and a limited amount of post-event work.

Working under the direction of the Vice Chair, the Operations Team is responsible for the planning and execution of all the logistical elements of the World Leadership Congress including housing, facilities, transportation, office support and integrated support of all other teams.

The following positions are considered full time, onsite volunteers with an expected arrival date of Wednesday, July 19 and a departure date of Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Operations Director: Provides direct support to and assists the Vice Chair. Works directly with the Housing & Facilities Manager and Food and Beverage Manager to ensure logistics are planned for all program participants in advance of the event including students, volunteers, speakers, guests, etc. Position requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience, strong organizational and customer service skills, and be over 25 years of age.

Transportation Director: Coordinates all volunteer and ambassador transportation needs during the WLC (buses, metro train, rental cars, etc.), including arrivals, departures and offsite transportation needs as well coordinating guest and speaker arrivals and departures as needed. Also supports the operations team as needed with a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) supply runs, loading and unloading of items, miscellaneous projects as assigned. The position requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience, strong organizational and customer service skills and be over 25 years of age.

Team Alumni Director: Coordinates Team Alumni to assist with the logistical needs of the WLC including loading and unloading of supplies, participant transitions between locations, laundry coordination, distribution of snacks and supplies, etc. This position requires excellent organization and communication skills. Requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 21 years of age.

The following positions are considered full time, onsite volunteers with an expected arrival date of Thursday, July 20 and a departure date of Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Team Alumni Manager: Assists Team Alumni Director in coordinating Team Alumni through various assignments throughout the week.  Focuses on team building and cultivation of leadership skills of the members of team alumni.  Requires a moderate amount of advance work.  Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 21 years of age.

Food and Beverage Manager: Plans for all meals and snacks throughout the WLC for volunteers and ambassadors, including special meal requirements for all events.  Will coordinate with Special Events Coordinator for meal requirements for Closing Ceremonies and pre/post-WLC volunteer staff appreciations. Also supports the operations team as needed with a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) supply runs, transportation needs, miscellaneous projects as assigned. Requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 21 years of age.

Housing and Facilities Manager: Coordinates on campus housing and various venues utilized throughout the event. Also supports the operations team as needed with a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) supply runs, transportation needs, miscellaneous projects as assigned. Requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 21 years of age.

IT Manager: Plans and executes all information technology needs for all teams. Troubleshoots and resolves IT issues and maintains the IT framework including rented equipment. Requires extensive knowledge in this field. This position requires a limited amount of advance work. HOBY volunteer experience a plus, but not mandatory. Must be over 21 years of age.

Operations Assistant: Two positions available. Supports the Vice Chair and operations team with various tasks including (but not limited to) supply runs, transportation needs, miscellaneous projects as assigned. Additionally, one Operations Assistant serves as primary coordinator for all day volunteers during the event including volunteer outreach, scheduling and training; the other Operations Assistant will coordinate the purchase, distribution and inventory of supplies needed throughout the week. These positions requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience, strong organizational and customer service skills and be over 18 years old.

Team Alumni: 15 positions available. Provides logistical support to the operations team as well as special assignments with other teams.  This position requires a minimal amount of advance work. Must be a HOBY alumnus/a, actively engaged as a volunteer for a local site, and have at least one (1) year of local HOBY program “junior staff” volunteer experience completed at time of application.  Must be between 17 and 20 years of age at the time of WLC and have completed a minimum of 100 hours of service hours logged in the HOBY L4S system. Prior WLC attendance/experience is not required. 

Special Events Assistant: Will work with the Food and Beverage Manager and Facilities Manager in coordinating the volunteer welcome event, volunteer thank you celebration and assisting with the Closing Ceremonies and Banquet. This is a part time position which requires a moderate amount of advance work and multiple people may be utilized based on volunteer availability and can be done in conjunction with another volunteer position if appropriate. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 21 years of age. Onsite day(s) coincide with events.

Operations Team Day Volunteers: (please select “Day Volunteer” on the volunteer application)

  • Office Assistant: Multiple positions available. Assists the Vice Chair, Operations with general office duties (answering the phone, making copies, etc.). Multiple volunteers may be named for this position depending on need. HOBY volunteer experience preferred, but not required.  Must be over 18 years of age. On-site days can be selected by volunteer based upon personal availability.
  • Arrival Day:  Multiple positions available. Meet and greet incoming students at various transportation hubs, help load and unload luggage and chaperone bus rides. Will work with Director of Transportation on specific assignments. HOBY experience a plus, but not required. Must be over 18 years of age.
  • Departure Day: Multiple positions available.  Responsible for troubleshooting transportation concerns for departing students at various transportation hubs, helping load and unload luggage and chaperoning bus rides. Will work with Director of Transportation on specific assignments. HOBY experience a plus, but not required. Must be over 18 years of age.

Working under the direction of the Vice Chair the Ambassador Staff, members of this Team are the front-line volunteers working directly with Student Ambassadors. Volunteers on the Ambassador Team are responsible for supervising Ambassadors at all times as well as working within their groups and sections to implement the program elements and the ambassador experience. 

The following positions are considered full time, onsite volunteers with an expected arrival date of Wednesday, July 19 and a departure date of Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Section Leader: Eight positions available. Coordinates, trains and oversees a team of one Alumni Section Assistant and five facilitators.  Responsible for various aspects of WLC experience and program (i.e. Photo Shoot, International Ambassador Presentations, Program Protocol, Talent Show, Thank You Notes, etc.). Requires past WLC experience, must have at least three years of HOBY facilitator experience and preferably additional key volunteer experience at a HOBY State Leadership Seminar. Strong problem solving skills and troubleshooting skills are critical in this position.  Must be over 25 years of age. This position requires a moderate amount of advance work.

Senior Alumni Section Assistant: Coordinates the Alumni Section Assistant team and is responsible for the “motivation factor” at the WLC. Supports the WLC Chair and the Vice Chair as needed. Requires past WLC Alumni Section Assistant experience, must be over 18 years of age. This position requires a limited amount of advance work.

The following positions are considered full time, onsite volunteers with an expected arrival date of Thursday, July 20 and a departure date of Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Group Facilitator: 40 positions available. Facilitates and responsible for a group of approximately 11 student ambassadors through the WLC experience. Responsible for contacting Ambassadors before WLC and communicating with Section Team throughout year.  Group Facilitators will have both international and domestic students in their group and should be comfortable managing a diverse group of students. Requires facilitator experience at a HOBY Local Leadership Seminar at time of application, must be over 21 years of age. This position requires a limited amount of advance work.

Alumni Section Assistant: Eight positions available. Assistant to a designated section leader, responsibilities vary, depending on section leader responsibilities. Supports senior alumni section assistant in motivating ambassadors. Must be a HOBY alumnus/a, actively engaged as a volunteer for a local site, and have at least one year HOBY leadership seminar junior staff volunteer experience completed.  Must be between 18 – 20 years old at the time of WLC and have completed a minimum of 100 hours of service hours logged in the HOBY L4S System.  Prior WLC volunteer experience is required. 

Working under the direction of the Vice Chair, the Program Team is responsible for the planning and execution of the educational curriculum of the World Leadership Congress including all speakers, leadership activities, and Leadership4Service activities.

The following positions are considered full time, onsite volunteers with an expected arrival date of Thursday, July 20 and a departure date of Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Program Manager: Assists in program development, including speaker and panelist contact, activity coordination, leadership4service activities, etc. Provides significant support to the Vice Chair, this position requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 21 years of age.

Program Assistant: Assists in program development, including speaker and panelist contact, activity coordination, etc. Provides significant support to the program team, this position requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 18 years of age.

AV Manager: Coordinates all audio visual support for the event including supporting speaker needs, production during the program transitions and activity support as needed as well as providing AV support for the Closing Banquet. Supports the Vice Chair, Program. Requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 18 years of age.

Program Activity Coordinators:

These positions are part-time volunteer roles which can be done by day volunteers or in conjunction with another volunteer role as appropriate. There may be multiple volunteers working on each activity. Each of these positions requires a moderate amount of advance work.

  • College Fair Coordinator: Assists the Vice Chair, Programs in developing and executing the college fair. Coordinates the sales outreach, communications and requirements for all participating schools. HOBY volunteer experience preferred, must be over 18 years of age.
  • Choir Coordinator: Coordinates the ambassador choir, conducts daily choir practice and directs the choir. The position requires a limited amount of advance work and familiarity with HOBY programs is preferred. Must be over 21 years of age.  
  • Art Project Coordinator:  Coordinates the ambassador art project, directs daily work in the artspace organizes final art product. The position requires a limited amount of advance work and familiarity with HOBY programs is preferred. Must be over 21 years of age.
  • Service Room Coordinator:  Coordinates the ambassador service room, directs daily work during staff meetings and organizes banquet service display. The position requires a limited amount of advance work and familiarity with HOBY programs is preferred. Must be over 21 years of age.

Working under the direction of the Vice Chair, this team develops all publications, and marketing materials prior to and during the event. Also coordinates all press releases, social media presence and the onsite HOBY store.

The following positions are considered full time, onsite volunteers with an expected arrival date of Thursday, July 20 and a departure date of Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Creative Director: Develops the look and feel of the event and carries that through all platforms. Develops event logo while keeping with HOBY branding standards, coordinates design of the program book, yearbook and newsletters. Design experience is required and must have access to any required hardware/software.  This position requires a significant amount of advance work. Must be over 21 years of age.

HOBY Store Manager: Recommends products, organizes inventory and manages the HOBY Store throughout the WLC. Also supports the marketing team as required. Position requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 21 years of age.

Social Media Manager: Works with all teams to orchestrate and implement an effective social media presence prior to and during the event. Requires a strong working knowledge of social media and effective communication strategies to build critical mass and engagement through the various platforms and channels. Also supports the marketing team and HOBY Store as required. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 21 years of age.

Photographer/Videographer: Serves as the official photographer and videographer throughout the WLC. Must provide own equipment, professional experience desired.  Responsible for various projects as directed by the WLC Chair, including but not limited to, the Closing Ceremonies and HOBY slideshows.  Must provide a final collection of materials containing all photo/video documentation to the Director of International Programs prior to departing WLC.  HOBY volunteer experience preferred, must be over 21 years of age. Requires a limited amount of advanced work.

Marketing Assistant: Supports the Vice Chair and marketing team and. Requires moderate advance work and knowledge of appropriate design software. HOBY volunteer experience preferred. Must be over 18 years of age. 

Working under the direction of the Vice Chair, Ambassador Safety the Ambassador Safety Team is responsible for the health and wellbeing of the students and staff during the event.

The following positions are considered full time, onsite volunteers with an expected arrival date of Thursday, July 20 and a departure date of Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Medic: Five positions available. Advises, assesses and treats ambassador medical concerns while at the WLC. Requires appropriate medical license. Must be over 21 years of age. This position requires minimal advance work.

Counselor: The counselor or “Wellness Warrior” provides additional support as needed for students and volunteers throughout the week. Additionally, the counselor works directly with students and volunteers to assist in any potential mandatory reporting situation or other mental health situation that arises. This position requires appropriate professional background/licensing/certification, preference will be given to applicants that meet Medic criteria as well. Must be over 21 years of age. Previous HOBY volunteer experience is not required, but would be helpful. This position may be done in conjunction with another volunteer placement, if appropriate. This position requires a limited amount of advance work.

Domestic and International Students are invited to participate in this optional Post WLC Tour of Chicago. Students and Volunteers will stay at Loyola University Chicago’s Water Tower Campus located in downtown Chicago near Michigan Avenue. The Post WLC Tour Team will participate in activities throughout Chicago with tour participants. Volunteers selected for this team will cover their own travel expenses to the Loyola Campus, but all other tour expenses including room and board will be covered by HOBY.

The following positions are considered part time, onsite volunteers with an expected arrival date of Friday, July 28 and a departure date of Monday, July 31, 2017 (evening).

Tour Group Leader: Plans and implements the three day post WLC tour for domestic and international students. Works directly with HOBY’s Director of International Programs to plan the tour activities and logistics. Must be over 25 years old and have HOBY volunteer experience, although WLC volunteer experience is not required. This position requires a moderate amount of advance work, especially immediately prior to the beginning of the WLC.

Tour Chaperone: Works directly with the Tour Group Leader and students to implement the post-WLC tour of Chicago. The number of chaperones will be dependent on the number of students participating.  WLC Volunteers from other teams can be considered for these positions if they meet the requirements and are willing and available to depart the Loyola Lakeshore Campus the morning of Saturday, July 29. Must be 25 years old and have HOBY volunteer experience, although WLC volunteer experience is not required. These volunteer appointments can’t be made prior to June, 2017 due to the timing of student registration.
