About HOBY

Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

Nearly 500,000 students have participated in HOBY programs and have gained confidence, leadership skills and a greater sense of the positive impact they can make in their communities.

About the World Leadership Congress (WLC)

Student participants often refer to the WLC as a “life-changing experience”. It’s a place where students can be inspired and challenged to broaden their perspective and begin to see themselves as part of something larger, part of the global community we all share.

The days at WLC are very active and are a combination of Keynote speakers, interactive workshops, creative activities, team building activities and community service projects.

Student Safety

Student safety is a primary concern for all of our programs and HOBY has rigid risk management policies and procedures in place to keep all students and volunteer safe.
Our safety procedures include:

  • Students are never allowed to leave campus unsupervised, at any time.
  • Students must use the buddy-system at all times.
  • Every student is assigned to a group of 10-12 students with an adult facilitator, they move from place to place with their group.
  • Students are supervised from breakfast to bed-checks.
  • Students and volunteers are given HOBY T-shirts for the week, making it easy to identify our group members anywhere we are!
  • All HOBY staff and volunteers submit to a nationwide criminal background check.
  • All HOBY Staff and volunteers are required to sign a Code of Conduct.
  • HOBY has a team of medics onsite at the WLC for the duration of the event.
  • HOBY works with Campus Safety to ensure emergency plans are in place and our volunteers are trained on emergency protocols.

The World Leadership Congress takes place at Loyola University Chicago on their Lakeshore Campus, located in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the far north side of Chicago. Rogers Park is bordered by both Evanston, IL and Lake Michigan.
